Adakah Kerajaan Serius Menentang Inflasi?
10:11 PM | 1Malaysia, Current Issues, Malaysia, Rakyat, TheMalaysianInsider | 0 comments »Share

Sugar price up 20 sen tomorrow
KUALA LUMPUR, May 9 — The price of sugar will be raised by 20 sen to RM2.30 effective at midnight.
This follows a previous increase in December last year, which saw the price being raised by a similar amount.
The increase is part of the government’s concerted subsidy cuts first announced on July 16 last year, when prices went up by five sen per litre for petrol and diesel, 10 sen per kg for LPG and 20 sen per kg for sugar.
It also comes after the price of RON97 petrol was increased by 20 sen last week. RON97 is, however, not subsidised and its price determined by a managed float.
Last week, the United Nations released a survey projecting a moderate slide in economic growth for Malaysia this year due to rising food and fuel prices, which economists predicted would be further hampered by the government’s lack of political will for reforms.

Singapore's PAP retains power; opposition makes gains
SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Singapore's long-ruling People's Action Party (PAP) swept back to power as expected in the most contested general election since independence, but the opposition made historic gains in what both sides called a landmark vote.
Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said it was a watershed election and indicated it could bring change in the city-state, one of the wealthiest and fastest-growing nations in Asia but tainted by criticism of political restrictions and little tolerance of dissent.
This year the opposition put up candidates for 82 of 87 seats in parliament, the most constituencies it has ever contested. In 2006, just over half the seats were contested.
"It marks a distinct shift in our political landscape," Lee told an early morning news conference on Sunday. "Many (Singaporeans) wish for the government to adopt a different style and approach."
"Many desire to see more opposition voices in parliament to check the PAP government."
Lee was among the winners as state television announced that the PAP had secured 81 of 87 seats in parliament. The six seats that went to the opposition was the highest number it has ever taken.
Foreign Minister George Yeo was among the PAP's losers as part of the team defeated by the opposition Workers' Party in a five-member constituency.
"You have made history tonight," Workers' Party chief Low Thia Khiang told supporters. "This is a political landmark in modern Singapore.
"Your votes tell us that Singapore is not just an economic success, Singapore is our home.
"Your votes tell us that you want Singapore to develop as a nation. Your votes tell the government you want a more responsive, inclusive, transparent and accountable government."
As he spoke, supporters dressed in the party's blue colours chanted "Ole, Ole," and threw confetti on each other, shouting and clapping.
NO POLICY CHANGE
Although it was a sweeping win in terms of seats, the PAP's share of the popular vote slipped to around 60 percent from around 67 percent at the last election, the results showed. But analysts noted the PAP was firmly in control since it easily retained the two-thirds majority that allows it to amend the constitution.

No policy shifts, especially in economic policy, were anticipated, they said.
"Given Singapore's parliamentary system, the ruling party has the ability to pass comfortably key legislation, including constitutional amendments," Prasenjit Basu, chief regional economist at Daiwa Capital Markets, said in a report.
"With the PAP still solidly in control of policy-making and implementation, we do not expect substantive changes in policy post-election -- although marginal changes could occur via debate and deliberation later in the parliament's term."
The opposition had focused its campaign on the ills brought by Singapore's growth -- rising income inequality, high prices and an unwelcome influx of foreigners. It also complained that the PAP government had little time for alternative points of view.
The PAP pointed to its stewardship of Singapore since independence in 1965 that had transformed a sleepy colonial port to a gleaming financial hub. Lee Hsien Loong's father, Singapore's founder Lee Kuan Yew, was the longtime party chief.
Financial markets have largely ignored the election since the outcome was never in doubt. external factors were likely to rule in the local stock market on Monday, said Song Seng Wun, an economist with CIMB.
"The results show that Singapore is growing up," he added. "There is greater willingness to allow for more alternative voices to be heard in parliament."
PAP backers said there were lessons to be learned.
"It is definitely good for Singapore, but I think the leaders and government realised that there's a gap between them and people on the ground," said Jagjit Singh, a 72-year-old.
In 2006, the PAP won 82 of 84 seats.

Photos show three dead men at bin Laden raid house
(Reuters) - Photographs acquired by Reuters and taken about an hour after the U.S. assault on Osama bin Laden's compound in Abbottabad in Pakistan show three dead men lying in pools of blood, but no weapons.
The photos, taken by a Pakistani security official who entered the compound after the early morning raid on Monday, show two men dressed in traditional Pakistani garb and one in a t-shirt, with blood streaming from their ears, noses and mouths.
The official, who wished to remain anonymous, sold the pictures to Reuters.
None of the men looked like bin Laden. President Barack Obama decided not to release photos of his body because it could have incited violence and used as an al Qaeda propaganda tool.
"I think that given the graphic nature of these photos, it would create some national security risk," Obama told the CBS program "60 Minutes."
Based on the time-stamps on the pictures, the earliest one was dated May 2, 2:30 a.m., approximately an hour after the completion of the raid in which bin Laden was killed.
Other photos, taken hours later at between 5:21 a.m. and 6:43 a.m. show the outside of the trash-strewn compound and the wreckage of the helicopter the United States abandoned. The tail assembly is unusual, and could indicate some kind of previously unknown stealth capability.
Reuters is confident of the authenticity of the purchased images because details in the photos appear to show a wrecked helicopter from the assault, matching details from photos taken independently on Monday.
U.S. forces lost a helicopter in the raid due to a mechanical problem and later destroyed it.
The pictures are also taken in sequence and are all the same size in pixels, indicating they have not been tampered with. The time and date in the photos as recorded in the digital file's metadata match lighting conditions for the area as well as the time and date imprinted on the image itself.
The close-cropped pictures do not show any weapons on the dead men, but the photos are taken in medium close-up and often crop out the men's hands and arms.
One photo shows a computer cable and what looks like a child's plastic green and orange water pistol lying under the right shoulder of one of the dead men. A large pool of blood has formed under his head.
A second shows another man with a streak of blood running from his nose across his right cheek and a large band of blood across his chest.
A third man, in a T-shirt, is on his back in a large pool of blood which appears to be from a head wound.
U.S. acknowledgment on Tuesday that bin Laden was unarmed when shot dead had raised accusations Washington had violated international law. The exact circumstances of his death remained unclear and could yet fuel controversy, especially in the Muslim world.
Pakistan faced national embarrassment, a leading Islamabad newspaper said, in explaining how the world's most-wanted man was able to live for years in the military garrison town of Abbottabad, just north of the capital.
Pakistan blamed worldwide intelligence lapses for a failure to detect bin Laden, while Washington worked to establish whether its ally had sheltered the al Qaeda leader, which Islamabad vehemently denies.

Dr M backs Najib’s warning to Chinese
PUTRAJAYA: Dr Mahathir Mohamad today backed the warning by Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak that the Chinese risk losing government representation if they keep voting for the opposition.
The former premier said Chinese voters cannot expect Barisan Nasional (BN) to pick elected leaders from DAP into the government.
“It’s just not logical,” he told reporters here, adding that this trend is a cause for alarm as a halt in Chinese-Malay cooperation will destabilise the nation.
Najib recently told the Chinese electorate to vote for MCA if they want representation in Putrajaya.
“I see MCA sending the message that the Chinese cannot support the opposition and at the same time expect strong representation in the government. They have to choose,” he said.
While the statement led some to accuse the BN chairman of political blackmail, MCA president Dr Chua Soi Lek defended Najib’s remarks, arguing that it was a fact.
Meanwhile, Mahathir said the same situation happened in 1969.

Then MCA president, the late Tun Tan Siew Sin, gave the same warning, saying that the Chinese must continue to vote for the party to maintain representation in the government.
“But in any case, MCA still won quite a lot of seats so there were candidates for MCA to be represented in the government,” he added.
The political tension between the Malays and the Chinese in that year led to the infamous bloody May 13 racial riots that left hundreds dead.
Observers said such statements will send mixed signals and alienate Chinese voters further, rendering Najib’s 1Malaysia concept hollow.
Claims of discriminative policies have made the Chinese voters, the country’s second largest electorate, to turn to the opposition.
This is exacerbated by the emergence of ultra-Malay groups like Perkasa comprising Umno sympathisers who are calling for race-based affirmative action policies to be sustained.
International bodies like the World Bank believe racial polarisation has become one of the major stumbling blocks to Malaysia’s potential and economic growth.

Pakatan Rakyat, Adakah Anda Sudah Bersedia?

Cracks in Pakatan over S’wak shadow cabinet?
PETALING JAYA: Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim today said the pact has not named its official shadow cabinet line-up in Sarawak, just days after the state DAP leader said otherwise.
Anwar’s statement contradicted the Sunday announcement by Sarawak DAP and opposition chief Wong Ho Leng that Pakatan’s 16-member shadow cabinet was ready.
Anwar said Wong’s line-up was only a “proposal”.
“It was only a proposal by the DAP but they have to consult with Sarawak PAS and PKR too for a consensus,” he said after chairing a Pakatan meeting today.
PKR and DAP in Sarawak have been at odds, albeit silently, on various issues even before the state elections kicked off.
The latter had accused PKR of arm-twisting over seat allocations which led to allegations that talks had collapsed.
It was later rectified but the crack remained apparent when the DAP again told the media without prior consultation with PKR that Baru Bian has been nominated as the candidate for the chief minister’s post should Pakatan take over.
As it turned out DAP did better than PKR in the state polls and its state chief Wong was eventually named the state opposition leader.
Baru is PKR’s Sarawak chief and won the Ba’Kelalan state seat, one of only three seats won by PKR. He was present at today’s press conference.
Anwar said that any decision made on the shadow cabinet issue must first receive the approval at the state and central levels.
“The consensus must come from negotiations at the state and central levels. We are still discussing that,” he said.
Both PKR and DAP have denied any split between them. The Sarawak election results that saw Pakatan more than doubled their seats were attributed to the strong cooperation between the component parties.
The DAP won 13 seats. It had only won 5 in the last elections while PKR added two.

It is not Anwar, says HRP
KUALA LUMPUR: Indian rights activist P Uthayakumar got a shock when he found a copy of the alleged Anwar Ibrahim sex video in his mailbox.
The Human Rights Party (HRP) secretary-general said that the video, which was in a CD, was sent to him on April 29 via airmail from Thailand.
“When we played the CD to find out what it was, we discovered it was the (alleged) Anwar sex video,” he told reporters at the HRP office.
Uthayakumar said the envelope was postmarked in Thailand on April 25.
He said that he and other HRP members later watched the video in full, and was convinced that the adulterer was not the opposition leader.
Instead, he said that the video was the government’s efforts in trying to “politically kill” off Anwar.
“I think the sender wanted me to influence me to be part of the conspiracy to implicate Anwar,” he said.
Uthayakumar also said that HRP’s vocal criticism of Pakatan Rakyat’s policies may have been a factor in sending the video to him.
“I am not a blind supporter of Anwar and we are very critical of him,” he said.
Nevertheless, he said that the video was part of a greater conspiracy targeted at the PKR supremo.
He accused the police and the Special Branch of having a hand in sending the video to his house, which he claimed not even his close friends knew.
“Nobody knows my exact address,” he said, adding that the letter’s was supposedly printed by the authorities.
‘Police the perpetrators’
Uthayakumar said that the manner in which the letter was sent was similar to a 2004 envelope containing a live bullet mailed to his residence.
He said that he was not going to file a police report over the CD, citing a total lack of confidence over the matter.
“They (police) are the perpetrators of this crime,” he said, adding that there is also a loss of faith in the Malaysian judiciary.
Instead, Uthayakumar said: “We are going to send this CD to Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak’s office with a message to stop this level of gutter politics.”
He added that he was planning on doing so next week.
The sex video was shown in early April to a group of journalists at the Carcosa Seri Negara hotel.
Revealed by businessman Shahzryl Eskay Abdullah, Perkasa treasurer Shuib Lazim and former Malacca Chief Minister Rahim Tamby Chik (collectively known as Datuk T), the video appeared to depict Anwar having sex with a Chinese sex worker.
Anwar has since vehemently denied the claims, and accused the government of political assassination.
